House of Cords

Your cellphone is not the only thing in need of an upgrade. Make your home high-tech with these five items.

1. Sound Off

The Bose SoundLink Mini Bluetooth speaker ($199.95 at Bose.com) lets you be footloose and wire-free. Standing 2 inches tall, this pint-sized speaker packs a punch with a wireless range of 30 feet. ConsumerReports.org says it has good sound quality and TechRadar.com gives it four and a half of five stars.

2. Power Up

If your appliances hog your kitchen outlets, you need the TowlHub: a water-resistant paper towel holder with four USB ports to charge your electronics, Bluetooth capability, two built-in speakers, and a removable wine stopper ($49.99 at Towlhub.com).

3. Digital Lullabies

If you can’t drift off to dreamland, the SoftSound Pillow Speaker ($59.99 from Amazon.com) can help you get there. A study conducted by the International Journal of Nursing Studies found listening to music before bed improved the sleep quality of people with chronic sleep disorders. The pillow’s speaker allows you to listen to your favorite sounds sans headphones.

4. A New Kind of Tube

Amazon’s smokin’ TV system, Amazon Fire TV ($99 at Amazon.com), will revolutionize your screen time. Unlike Apple TV and Roku, Fire TV operates on voice commands and makes channel surfing a thing of the past. With Fire TV you can stream over 200,000 shows and movies and rent and play the latest video games starting at 99 cents.

5. Wake Up On The Bright Side

Do the shrill squeals of your alarm clock make you feel less than chipper in the a.m.? A more natural alternative is the Philips HF3500/60 Wake-Up Light ($69.99 at Amazon.com). This alarm clock gradually increases in brightness 30 minutes before your wake-up time. Bonus: A recent study by the Journal of Biological Rhythms says exposure to varying levels of light can normalize your circadian rhythm and make falling asleep and waking up easier.
