The newest trend in travel, selfie hotels, encourages everyone to snap a great vacation.

Your picture could soon be worth a paid vacation. Selfies, the phenomenon of giving face time via pictures on social media, enters the world of tourism with the invention of selfie hotels. From New York City to Australia, boutique hotels offer discounts and other promotional deals to guests who tag the resorts in their vacation selfies.
The self-proclaimed “world’s first Instagram hotel,” 1888 Hotel in Sydney, pioneered the trend when it reopened as a “boutique hotel” in 2013. Originally a wool store, the hotel was built in 1888, the same year Kodak invented roll film. The connection inspired the hotel to incorporate Instagram in both its business and brand. A full-scale frame hangs in the lobby’s “selfie space,” where guests can take pictures and view their selfies on the hotel’s live Instagram feed shown on monitors in the reception area. 1888 Hotel gives a free night to guests with over 10,000 Instagram followers and awards a guest each month with a free night’s stay for the best hotel photo.
In New York City, The Muse Hotel offers guests a chance to win anything from a round of drinks to a room upgrade if they win the hotel’s selfie scavenger hunt, in which they document their findings through selfies. In Puerto Rico, La Concha A Renaissance Resort’s “Take a Selfie Adventure” package enables guests to share their experiences as they visit Puerto Rico’s historic landmarks. In May, Hotel Modera in Portland, Ore., launched its own selfie competition in which guests could win prizes for the most original selfie.
General Manager of 1888 Andrew Adams-Smith says selfie hotels are the beginning of the future for social media in the tourism industry. “We, as individuals, love posting pics of ourselves, particularly in cool and interesting locations,” Smith says. “Social media is the new way for storytelling.”
